Bathing Lake Near the Zollenspieker Fährhaus

Hohendeicher See | Oortkatensee

The Hohendeicher See is right behind the Elbe dyke in the Vier- und Marschlanden area of the Bergedorf district. This lake existed in 1966 when gravel and clay were extracted for the dyke construction. On the lake’s eastern shore, a campsite is available for visitors. The two bathing areas are on the western shore (small sandy beach and sunbathing area) and the southern coast (large sandy beach and sunbathing area). There is no separate non-swimmer area. The western part of the lake is used intensively by surfers. Caution: Near the shore are cliffs where the water abruptly becomes deep, characteristic of a quarry pond. Unfortunately, there is no lifeguard present. The Hohendeicher See (also known as Oortkatensee among the Enheimische) is about 7 km from the Zollenspieker Fährhaus.
